1953年5月25日アリゾナ空軍基地で産声を上げた世界最高アクロバットチーム”サンダーバード。当時”ドン・フェリス大佐の引退記念モデルとして特別発注されたと言われるがそれは日本の誇張過ぎたストーリーであるが、正式には1960年にはその自信に満ち溢れたサンダーバードの鷲のエンブレムをRef.6609のダイアルの9時位置に描き、その”thunderbird”の文字がダイアルに無いにしろ初めてロレックスがサンダーバードという言葉を使い宣伝したことによりここで初めてサンダーバードとしての伝説がヒストリーに刻まれることとなった。
そのストーリー。Ref.6309ファーストをオリジンとして1953年、同時期に誕生したRef.6202の派生モデルとして誕生したとも言われ、同じクロスラインのベゼルを共有パーツとして独特の造形美を誇ってきたが、同時、6200,6205,6204と言ったサブマリーナ群に寄り添うようにその存在価値の位置づけを創ってきたのかもしれない。しかしその位置づけを確かなものとして2010年サンダーバードという架空ネーミングは始めて”TURN O GRAPH/ターノグラフ”としてフルモデルチェンジとなった。それは6202に回避したように、まるでサンダーバードという世界は架空のものであると言わんばかりに復刻を遂げたか….しかしそれはある意味それまでのサンダーバードという世界が本家ターノグラフであると言っても過言ではないことを明らかにしたのではないだろうか? そしてそれにより6609をセカンドとしたターノグラフは、1960年にCal.1560誕生と同時に黄金期を迎え3代”Ref.1625”のリファレンスで完全に独自の世界を創り上げたと言っても過言ではない。それは20年近くの歴史を歩み、65年にはロレックス史最高のキャリバーと謳われた”Cal.1570”誕生となりデイトジャストというモデルを世界に導いたことは確かである。
今回ご紹介させて頂く一品は、 あえてサンダーバードと呼ぼう。リファレンスナンバーRef.1625。スタンダードであるが、人気のデイトジャストの1575機の中でもずばぬけて人気のモデル。更に今回の一品は市場から消えてしまった18金無垢モデル。光沢のあるホワイト文字盤は後期のタイプでほぼ腐食のない完璧な状態と言っても過言ではない。ケースも小傷程度で磨き痕はあるものの、全く痩せもなく最高の逸品である。

On May 25, 1953, at an air base in Arizona, the world’s greatest aerobatic team was born — the United States Air Force Thunderbirds.

There is a story often told in Japan that the Rolex Turn-O-Graph Ref. 6609 was specially commissioned as a retirement commemorative model for Colonel Don Ferris. While this tale may be somewhat exaggerated, the true historical turning point came in 1960, when Rolex officially advertised the model using the name “Thunderbird” for the very first time.

At that time, the proud eagle emblem of the Thunderbirds was printed at the 9 o’clock position on the dial of Ref.6609.
Even though the word “Thunderbird” itself did not appear on the dial, this marked the moment when the Thunderbird legend was officially etched into Rolex history.

The story itself traces back to 1953.
The origin is said to begin with Ref.6309, while others believe it evolved as a derivative of the contemporary Ref.6202. Sharing the same cross-hatched rotating bezel design, these early models established their own unique aesthetic identity. At the same time, they existed alongside the early Rolex Submariner references such as 6200, 6204, and 6205, perhaps defining their value in relation to the growing Submariner lineage.

Then, decades later, Rolex effectively reaffirmed the model’s true identity.
By 2010, the fictional nickname “Thunderbird” had disappeared, and the model was fully reborn under its official name: Rolex Turn-O-Graph.

It was almost as if Rolex itself wished to declare that “Thunderbird” had merely been a romantic nickname, while the genuine heritage had always belonged to the Turn-O-Graph. Yet in another sense, this also proved that the entire Thunderbird mythology had become inseparable from the true Turn-O-Graph story itself.

With Ref.6609 representing the second generation, the Turn-O-Graph entered its golden age alongside the arrival of the legendary Caliber 1560 in 1960.
Then came the third-generation Ref.1625, which fully established its own distinct world and identity.

Over nearly twenty years of evolution, Rolex would eventually introduce in 1965 what many consider the greatest movement in Rolex history — the legendary Caliber 1570 — helping lead the Rolex Datejust into worldwide prominence.

And now, let us intentionally call this piece by that legendary name:

“Thunderbird.”

The watch presented here is Ref.1625.
While considered a standard production model, it remains one of the most sought-after among all Datejust references powered by the Caliber 1575.

Furthermore, this particular example is the now nearly vanished solid 18k gold model.

Its glossy white dial is a later-generation type and remains in virtually flawless condition, with almost no visible corrosion.
The case shows only minor signs of wear and light polishing marks, yet retains excellent thickness without noticeable loss of shape.

Without question, this is an exceptional masterpiece.
