In 1957, Rolex developed the Caliber 1035, a date-equipped version of the legendary Caliber 1030. This movement was fitted to Oyster Date models such as the Ref. 6518 and Ref. 6530, creating a clear distinction between the Oyster Date and the Datejust, which would later be powered by the more advanced Caliber 1065 in the Ref. 6605.
That distinction, however, disappeared in 1959 with the introduction of the Caliber 1560 and its date-equipped counterpart, the Caliber 1565. From a technical standpoint, there was no longer any significant difference between the Oyster Date of the 1500 family and the Datejust of the 1600 family.
To preserve the identity and prestige of the Datejust, Rolex gave the Oyster Date a more compact 34 mm case, one size smaller than the Datejust. From that point onward, the Oyster Date established its role as the compact alternative to the Datejust. Its refined proportions and understated elegance earned it a unique character of its own, and it is no exaggeration to say that the model helped create an enduring culture surrounding the Perpetual Date.
1945年、キャリバー740誕生により、”Ref.4467”デイトジャストが生まれ、その誕生から2年後の1947年セカンドデイトキャリバーとなる”745”搭載のデイトジャストセカンド”Ref.6075″と同時に、この世に生を成した”オイスターデイト”。当時は同キャリバーを搭載していたことで、デイトジャストとオイスターデイトの格差は無かったが、1950年に初となる両方向巻き上げ式として1030キャリバーが誕生し、1957年にその1030にデイト機能を搭載した”1035キャリバー”が開発されるとRef.6518やRef.6530などオイスターデイトに搭載されることで、後の”キャリバー1065”搭載のRef.6605とのデイトジャストとの格差が生まれたが、1959年”キャリバー1560、同時デイトキャリバー”1565”誕生により、1500ファミリーのオイスターデイトと1600ファミリーのデイトジャストとスペック上での格差は無くなった。しかしその意味たるものの違いを埋める為に、34mmと一回りデイトジャストよりも小さくすることで、その後のオイスターデイトは、デイトジャストのコンパクトサイズとしてその役目を果たすこととなり、その落ち着きさが独特を、そしてパーペチュアルデイトという一つの文化を築き上げたと言っても過言ではない。
そんなオイスターパーペチュアルデイトから今回ご紹介するのは、14金無垢モデルで、そのベゼルの彫金仕上げとして縄のような模様に海外ではリーディドベゼル、日本ではエッジベゼルともいいリファレンスは1503となり、その見た目はオイスターデイトでありながらかなりゴージャスで、気品の満ち溢れた最高のビートを感じることが出来る。
