In an era before precision lathes were fully established, master craftsmen shaped each case by hand—carving a solid block of stainless steel into a monocoque structure. The resulting TV case, with its raw, extraordinary sense of weight, seems to channel the entire brilliance of the steel—along with the original bracelet—into the very soul of the “125” on the dial. Set against an applied black dial, the numeral “125” exists as if breathing life into the watch itself.
To ensure that all 2,000 pieces passed chronometer certification, each Caliber 1040 was individually hand-tuned and assembled. This truth defines the story of the Ref. 378.0801 Speedmaster 125 Chronometer, a model that continues to tell the dramatic legacy of the Speedmaster.
Its distinctive TV case features a flat, finely hairline-brushed front, paired with a slim high-polished bezel. Viewed through the thick mineral crystal, a deep and layered structure reveals itself: an inner black tachymeter bezel—housing the spirit of Omega’s first automatic chronograph movement, the Caliber 1040—extends inward toward the dial, creating remarkable depth. This design maximizes the presence of the tritium-filled bar indexes.
At 3 o’clock, a clearly divided grey and black sector serves as a highly legible 24-hour day-and-night display. At the center, the chronograph seconds hand is accompanied by the distinctive “airplane” hand, functioning as a minute counter—later adapted as a date hand in modern Speedmaster models.
